FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was designed to help young people explore their interests in science and technology. It was founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen who was an inventor, entrepreneur, and advocate for science and technology. This real world experience combines the excitement of a sporting event with science and technology to create a varsity sport for the mind. FIRST is based in Manchester, New Hampshire and is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit charity. One of the main goals for this program is to involve more girls to be excited and find interest in science and technology. Other skills gained from FIRST include: problem solving skills, time management skills, conflict resolution skills, and communication skills.
